We are the regional organization of the California Association for the Gifted. We are educators, parents and community members concerned about and involved with gifted education in our region of California. The following people have volunteered to serve in leadership positions:
Educator Representative Lyn Cavanagh-Olson: Lyn has worked in GATE Services for Pajaro Valley Unified School District (Santa Cruz County) for nine years, serving as Coordinator for the last four years. Before that she was a classroom teacher for fourteen years where she took many leadership and peer coaching assignments. Lyn’s interest in gifted education was peeked in her first days in the classroom, when she quickly recognized that some of her students already knew how to complete the lesson she had worked so hard to prepare. She realized early on that she was responsible for providing challenging and engaging learning opportunities for all of her students.
Ms. Cavanagh-Olson received her MA in Educational Leadership from San Jose State University, is a certified GATE teacher, and has completed many graduate courses in Gifted Education at the University of Connecticut. She is committed to developing student potential and supporting teachers in differentiating for all their learners.
Parent Representative Regan Foust: Regan Foust earned her Ph.D. in Gifted Education and Psychology of the Gifted from the University of Virginia. She is currently the Co-founder/Owner and Gifted Specialist of Education Directions, a community resource center specializing in giftedness and learning differences, whose mission is to help families and educators create a path to joyful learning for their children. She is also a Senior Research Associate at Sociometrics, a for-profit research and development firm specializing in social science research applications, whose mission is to produce research-based products and services for researchers and practitioners.
Dr. Foust has researched academic and social/emotional appropriateness of honors and advanced placement programs for gifted learners, gender and age differences in self-concept and social coping strategies of gifted students, and psychometric properties of assessments for the gifted. She also has experience as gifted teacher, psychological assessment specialist, and in all areas and methodologies of educational and psychological research. She is deeply passionate about gifted education and is excited to help parents and teachers better understand and, thus, better help the gifted children in their care.
